Green Island Queensland
Green Island is a small coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, about 27 km offshore from Cairns. It is one of the few reef islands where you can combine reef activities, sandy beaches and rainforest walks in one easy trip.
This is an independent guide to Green Island Queensland. I first visited Green Island as a child in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and returned with my own family in 2026 for a three-night stay. The guides below combine that first-hand experience with practical information about ferries, things to do, swimming, what to wear, where to stay and when to go.
Why visit Green Island?
Green Island appeals to travellers who want an easy Great Barrier Reef experience without a long boat trip or complicated planning. It is particularly well suited to families, first-time reef visitors and people looking for a straightforward island trip from Cairns.
Having now returned with my own children, one of Green Island's biggest advantages is how easy everything is once you arrive. The beach, swimming area, snorkelling, rainforest boardwalk, food outlets and visitor facilities are all close together.

How long should you stay on Green Island?
For a day trip, most people should allow at least half a day, and a full day is better if you want time to swim, snorkel, walk and relax. A shorter visit can work if you only want a quick look, but a full day feels much less rushed.
For an overnight visit, we stayed three nights and felt that was the sweet spot for our family. Two nights would still give you one complete day on the island without having to watch the ferry timetable.

Can you stay overnight?
Yes. Green Island has one resort, so accommodation choices are limited, but staying overnight provides a very different experience from a day trip. Once the main day-trip ferries leave, the island becomes much quieter and overnight guests can enjoy the beach, jetty, sunset and early morning without the daytime crowds.

What amenities are on Green Island?
Green Island has the amenities most day visitors need, including toilets, drinking water, picnic areas and food outlets. It is not a large, built-up island with lots of shops and services, but it has enough facilities for a comfortable day trip.

Is Green Island safe for swimming?
Compared with many mainland surf beaches, Green Island is a very safe and easy place to swim. The main beach has calm, clear water without surf or rips, the shoreline slopes gradually into the water, and there is a patrolled swimming area. Normal water safety still applies, and stinger suits are sensible during the warmer months.

What is the water temperature at Green Island?
Green Island water is warm enough for swimming all year. It is usually coolest in July and August, when the sea is around 24°C, and warmest from January to March, when it is close to 29°C.
If you are planning to swim or snorkel, it helps to know the difference between a wetsuit for warmth and a stinger suit for jellyfish protection.

Green Island vs Fitzroy Island
Many Cairns visitors compare Green Island with Fitzroy Island. Green Island is generally the better choice for soft sandy beaches, younger children, easy walking and a compact coral-cay experience. Fitzroy Island is usually better for hiking, rugged scenery and a larger, more active island day.
My own preference is Green Island. I visited both islands as a child and returned to Green Island with my family in 2026, although I have not revisited Fitzroy Island recently.
